National Parks Forever© Stamps
A Sacred Lotus with a bloom the size of a basketball in Washington, DC’s Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens is featured on the 11th of 16 Forever Stamp images. The stamps were revealed individually over a three-week period to celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary in 2016. The stamp image was photographed by Cindy Dyer of Alexandria VA, who also provided the images from Kenilworth for the Water Lilies Forever® Stamps issued in 2015. The Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), is the star attraction at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens during its blooming period from late June to early September.
The June 2 first-day-of-issue ceremony for the National Parks Forever Stamps pane took place at New York City’s Javits Center as part of the world’s largest stamp show that only takes place in the United States once a decade, World Stamp Show-NY 2016
Water Lilies Forever® Stamps Special Dedication Ceremony at Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens
The Water Lilies Forever© stamps were unveiled in a special dedication ceremony on Saturday at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens. In this photo shot by Mark Saunders (USPS PR Dept.), Dr. Wendy Mcilwain (USPS Southern MD Processing and Distribution Center Manager) and I unveil the stamps before the kick off of the Lotus and Water Lily Festival.
It started out rainy and very overcast that morning, but about an hour before showtime, it began to clear. The weather was downright pleasant—not the usual ghastly hot temps of a typical D.C. July day! Thanks to my “entourage” for their physical, emotional and moral support—Debbie Dyer Talbert, Michael Schwehr, Greg Carlton, Michael Powell and Heather Callin.
FYI: The Postal Service typically prints between 20 million and 40 million stamps of an individual subject. Half a billion Water Lilies Forever® stamps were printed in anticipation of extreme customer demand. (They usually only print holiday stamps in that large amount.) Within six months of their debut, nearly half had been sold! So special thanks to all of you who have bought them—makes me look extra good.
Water Lilies Forever® Stamps Unveiled at the Garfield-Perry March Party Stamp Show in Cleveland, OH
Elegant water lilies grace these four new stamps from the U.S. Postal Service. Each stamp depicts a close-up view of the flower of one of four classic garden water lilies. Art director Phil Jordan designed the stamps with existing photographs taken by Cindy Dyer in midsummer at the Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens in Washington, DC.
